Mommy’s Helper

Project Overview

The app was created with the aim of connecting young mothers with family and close friends and to help them cope with the multiplicity of tasks and the stress experienced during the after birth period.

Problem and Consequences

When some of my friends became new mothers for the first time, I've noticed how difficult it was for them to cope with the changes in their lives, especially at first. This led me to think whether there's something that can be done to ease the transition into becoming a new mom.

I've identified the main problem to be that mothers of a first child have difficulty adjusting to the load and multiplicity of tasks after birth.

Furthermore, when there is lack of support there are additional consequences: tiredness, loneliness, depression and neglect.

Market Research

As part of my research, I've studied over 30 different mobile apps: tasks and employee management applications, family tasks management applications and monitoring applications for babies.

Top issues that came up from the research:
It's important to make the registration process simpler. Hence, the user shall be able to sign up via different platforms: by phone, Google and Facebook.

To encourage the user to return to use the app, the app will send her notifications when a helper completes a request to suggest her to thank him.

In order to reward the helpers who have completed the request, a special personal area will be created for them, where the mother will upload sound / video / photos of her and her baby to show her appreciation.

User Study

In the user study I've interviewed 20 women aged between 26 and 42, mothers of young children (up to one year of age) some are mothers for the first time.

Top issues that came up from the research:
Most mothers find it difficult to ask for help.

There are suddenly plenty of new urgent tasks that must be completed, so an extra help is often needed.

In the first months the baby goes through a lot of changes and there's nothing permanent for the mother to get used to, which adds to the stress.

Information Architecture

After reviewing and considering the results of my user and market research I have come up with the following app architecture.

Wireframes

The next step in my workflow is to create wireframes before moving on to the UI design.

Mockups

Adding a helper: from my research asking for help was the toughest thing a new mom has dealt with, this is why adding a helper is as easy as possible.

Thanking the Helper: another important conclusion I've reached is to make the helper feel appreciated. And what can be better than a photo, video or a sound bite of the new baby?
